“Blue Ocean provides a competitive pay rate for our joiners and we are looking for a certain quality of work and want our workforce to be paid accordingly. Matty finds the right kind of work to match the skills of the team, and they are offered a good working environment.
We aren’t a company of faceless people – we are a company of real people unlike some of the other construction companies. For example, Matty phones all his team members on a personal level and tries hard to keep us happy. A lot of other companies don’t do this and the team who work for Blue Ocean find it a refreshing change. We keep hold of the better joiners because of this – they accept any let downs as they are looked after in other ways.
I would happily recommend other joiners, even close friends, to work for Blue Ocean – for example I recommended a close friend of many years to work for Blue Ocean…I wouldn’t put a friendship on the line by recommending a company to work for that I didn’t believe in.”

Apprenticeship Opportunities
Blue Ocean Building source and train apprentices directly or support hosted sub-contractors via its partnership with the non-profit organisation The Calico Group and its affiliated CITB Shared Apprenticeship Scheme.
The Shared Apprenticeship Scheme, called Constructing the Future (CtF), is an innovative collaboration between CITB and regional partners. It has been established in response to industry demand, as a way of providing construction contractors with an opportunity to meet local training obligations, and to maximise additional training opportunities for apprentices.
Constructing the Future was established in July 2010 by Lancashire Housing Partnership, Regenerate Pennine Lancashire and CITB to develop careers in the construction sector. The Shared Apprenticeship Scheme, CtF, covers Cumbria, Lancashire Greater Manchester, Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside.
At the end two-year apprenticeship, the apprentices can gain a Level 2 Diploma through college studies, but also get NVQ qualification through the on-site training with the construction contractors. On completion of the Level 2 Diploma apprentices have the option to continue their career prospects by studying to gain a Level 3 Diploma – a qualification they need to become a site manager.
Constructing the Future provide the mentoring and coaching of the apprentices which includes looking after their welfare, making sure they turn up on site on time, being paid, monitoring in line with training targets and generally making sure they are happy.
CtF’s vision is to educate, inspire, and support people to develop careers in the construction sector and, as a result of the support from the construction sector, over 100 apprenticeships have been created across the North West since the CtF 2010 launch.
Mattie Yates, Joinery Apprentice for Blue Ocean Building shared his experience of working with us:
As part of my apprenticeship training I’ve been working for Blue Ocean Building since August 2017. I enjoy working for Blue Ocean Building and its experienced team of tradespeople are helping me develop the skills I need to become a qualified joiner at the end of my two-year apprenticeship.
My father is a joiner, so I already have a good insight into the carpentry trade but working on site with Blue Ocean Building has given me invaluable first-hand experience. Not just in relation to gaining joinery skills but also from working in a team. It’s been great getting the practical experience on site for my NVQ qualification as well as being trained in college.
Calico has also been fantastic by providing me with guidance and support. They also encourage me to record the projects I’ve completed and get feedback from Blue Ocean Building’s project manager, the site manager and CtF apprentice officer as well as checking that I am happy in my apprenticeship role.
I really appreciate the opportunity that CtF Shared Apprentice Scheme and Blue Ocean Building have given me to fulfil my ambition of becoming a skilled and qualified joiner.
“Blue Ocean Building is the best company I’ve ever worked for and I’ve worked for a lot of other contractors during my joinery career. I’ve been employed by Blue Ocean Building since August 2016 and during my time here I’ve found them to be fair, understanding and approachable. Matty has got a human element to his work ethic, which a lot of companies don’t have – i.e. they are all about the big buck and treading on the little guy. Blue Ocean Building truly cares about its team.”
